Margie Foote - Class of 1947

Margie Foote was born to Harry and Marie Foote in Reno Nevada at Mrs. Allen’s Maternity Home on December 23, 1929. Margie has a brother, Gordon, with whom she still gets along with very well.

As a child, Margie had an infection in her hip that destroyed it and she needed total hip replacement surgery. After the surgery, Margie was fine but she has been left with a limp since she was 4 years old.

This minor setback didn’t affect her too much since she was as athletic and involved as most of the kids in her neighborhood. She was a natural roller skater after learning on her parents’ living room carpet. Also she was an outstanding bicyclist and rode her bike all through the neighborhood with all her friends.

Margie attended Robert Mitchell Elementary School for most of her younger school days. She moved on to the “old” Sparks Junior High School and then she finally joined the “big show” at Sparks High School.

During her attendance at Sparks High, Margie was an outstanding student. She was a member of the Girls’ Athletic Association and received her athletic letter. She was the editor of the yearbook and was also the chairman of the decorating committee for the Sock Hop. Margie could be described as a well-rounded young lady.

Upon graduating Sparks High, Margie attended Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. After spending two years there, she came back to Sparks and went to UNR to finish up school and receive her BA.

After graduating, Margie became a teacher. She spent two years teaching at her old elementary school, Robert Mitchell, and two more in California. After that, Margie opened up the Carousel Shop down on 10th street where she sold children’s clothing for twenty-four years. While owning the shop, she decided to run for the Nevada State Assembly and won. She became the first woman from Sparks to be in the Nevada Assembly. After spending four terms in office, she ran for the Nevada Senate, winning, and once again Margie became the first woman to hold a Senate seat from Sparks. These are some of Margie’s greatest accomplishments and she is now being recognized for them.

Margie moved on in life and is now a member of a miniature club. She also helps out at the Sparks Heritage Museum two days a week and the rest of her time is spent hanging out with her great nieces and nephews and her lovable dog.
