Barbara Canady ~ Class of 1948

Barbara was born on February 16th, 1939, on the McNeilly Ranch on Wedekind Road to Herbert and Corinne Moore. Her parents were deaf, but they were not defined by their disability. They raised three daughters who grew up to be productive citizens in the community. The family home was located on D Street but in later years was replaced by the movie theater.

A graduate of Sparks High School in 1948, Barbara was very active in school activities such as G.A.A., Terminus Staff, Streamline Staff, Junior Frolic, and Junior Masqueraders. Her favorite activity was being a majorette and marching with the Sparks High School Band at football games as well as parades.

In the fall of 1948 Barbara became a Secretary at Sparks High School under the leadership of Proctor R. Hug, Sr. When the present Sparks High was opened in 1955, she moved with the staff, faculty, and students to the new school three blocks north on 820 15th Street.

She was well respected by the faculty and students at Sparks High School during her career of thirty-seven years and retired in 1985. Barbara and her husband, Bill, bought a fifth wheel and spent many summers at Tahoe Timber Trails with their family and good friends, Louie and Jean Matteoni. Barbara truly loved everything about the city of Sparks and cherished her wonderful relationship with the staff and students at Sparks High School.
