Procter Hug, Jr. - Class of 1949
Procter Hug, Jr. is a native of Sparks and attended Sparks’ grammar schools, in addition to Sparks High School. At SHS, he lettered in football, basketball, and track. He later won the high school state debate championship. During his junior year, he was chosen to represent SHS at Boys’ State, and was then selected to Nevada at Boys’ Nation, where he met President Truman. The next year he was elected Senior Class President, and was named Outstanding Boy of Sparks High School for 1949.
After graduating from SHS, he attended the University of Nevada, Reno, from which he graduated in 1953. He was Student Body President at UNR, as well as captain of the track team. He was also elected to Phi Kappa Phi. 1953, he joined the US Navy as an officer for two years. After serving in the Navy, he attended Stanford Law School, graduating with a J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree in 1958.
Upon being admitted to the Nevada Bar, he became an attorney and was elected the Nevada State Delegate to the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association. Judge Hug was also elected to the UNR Board of Regents three times.
Procter Hug, Jr. was appointed to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals by President Jimmy Carter on September 15, 1977 and Hug entered duty the next day. He assumed the position of Chief Judge of the 9th Circuit on March 1, 1996. On January 1, 2002, he retired to senior status.
Judge Hug married the former Barbara Van Meter, who was also his high school sweetheart. They have three children: Cheryl Hug English, M.D. of Reno; Procter James Hug, a Reno attorney; and Elyse Hug Pasha, a teacher in San Rafael, California. They have 8 grandchildren.
