Procter Hug, Sr. – Faculty
Procter Hug, Sr., a native of Elgin Oregon, was born October 2, 1902. He attended schools in Oregon and California and later attended high school in Tonopah, Nevada. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was elected to the position of Student Body President. At UNR, he excelled in football, basketball, and track, which led him to an outstanding coaching career at Sparks High School.
Hug, Sr. began his teaching and coaching career in 1927 at SHS. He coached football, basketball, and track. He led SHS to one state football title, two state basketball championships, and one state track title.
Not only did Procter Hug, Sr. help lead SHS athletic teams to numerous championships, but he was also the principal of SHS from 1937 to 1949. He was during the course of his career, the Superintendent of Sparks’ schools, and he continued in this position until 1956. He later became Assistant Superintendent for Washoe County schools for 4 years and was Superintendent for an additional 6 years. He retired in 1966 after nearly forty years in education.
After Procter Hug, Sr. retired, he was elected to the Nevada State Senate from Washoe County. He served from 1966 to 1972. During his time there, he helped establish the UNR medical school. In 1968, the Washoe County School District bestowed a great honor by naming a school after him: Procter Hug High School.
On June 11, 1929, Procter Hug, Sr. married Margaret Beverly, a marriage which lasted for 64 years. Together they had 3 children: Procter, Jr., Bev Sue, and Tricia. All three were SHS graduates. They also had eight grandchildren.
Procter Hug, Sr. passed away after a short illness in September of 1992, leaving many happy memories for those who knew him.
