Gregg Shugar ~ Class of 1988

Gregg Shugar was born at St. Mary’s Hospital on January 22, 1970, in Reno, NV. He has been a part of the Sparks community since birth. He attended Alice Maxwell Elementary, Sparks Middle School, and graduated in 1988 from Sparks High School. Shugar became an assistant coach for the Sparks High School football team in 1999 and has worked at Sparks ever since. He coached from 2001-2016 as the head coach for the Freshman and Junior Varsity football teams. His passion to coach came from his past as a four-year football player for the Sparks Railroaders.

Shugar met his wife Liz in Texas after high school. They have been married for twenty-five years, twenty-six this August. Together they have three children, AJ, Joey, and Lauren. All three of which have attended or will attend Sparks High School. Because of his love for the Sparks community and the school, Shugar continues to be a part of the Sparks High School family as the Registrar, Football Coach, Sports Announcer, and Block S club Advisor.

From his first steps in the “Brickhouse” in 1985 to now, Sparks High School has had a very special place in Shugar’s heart. He is a great example of what it means to bleed maroon and gold. Gregg Shugar represents the true meaning of “Once a Railroader, always a Railroader.”
