Tom Clewell - Class of 1965
Tom Clewell was born in Pennsylvania on October 4, 1947, and moved to Sparks, NV during junior high school. He attended Sparks Middle School, Dilworth Middle School, and Sparks High School. In July 1969, Tom decided to volunteer in the fire department, becoming a firefighter in October 1971; he was promoted to Fire Apparatus Operator, Captain, and received hie associate degree in Fire Science from Western Northern Nevada Community College in 1979. In November 1983, Tom was assigned fire investigator to Fire Prevention, and was a member of the International Association of Arson Investigators. He became Battalion Chief in 1990, Deputy Chief in 2002, Fire Chief in 2004, and retired as Fire Chief in 2007.
Tom Clewell received the Fire Fighter of the Year award in 1988, and service recognitions by Mayor Geno R. Martini, Senator Harry Reid, Governor Jim Gibbons, and Senator John Ensign. Tom Clewell also helped open the first Sparks Fire Department Museum. Tom Clewell has been married to his wife for 34 years, has two daughters and grandchildren. Tom has enjoyed his retirement by being with family, going on vacations, attending car shows, and participating in Hot August Nights.
