John Mayer – Class of 1960

            John Mayer is a life-long resident of Sparks, Nevada.  He graduated from Sparks High School in 1960.  He then went on to graduate from the University of Nevada, Reno where he received his Bachelors in Science in 1971; he continued his education at the University, receiving his Masters in Education in 1975.

            Mr. Mayer worked for the Washoe County School District as a teacher and principal from 1971 -2000.  Mr. Mayer is also a Vietnam veteran.  He was stationed in Japan with the Air National Guard.  He was a parachute packer and has been thanked by colleagues for saving their lives when emergency evacuation occurred.

            Mr. Mayer has served on the Sparks City Council since 1991, and he believed the most memorable projects have been giving Sparks High a new gym floor and an all-weather track.

            Mr. Mayer is married to Janis Peterson, whom he met when he was a teacher at Stead Elementary School; they have been happily married for 35 years.  They have three children, Emily, Allen and Amy, as well as two dogs, Yetti and Wookie.

            Mr. Mayer has always been concerned with the welfare and education of children.  He continues to touch students’ lives today by being a substitute teacher.  John Mayer is being inducted into the Hall of Fame for not only being an outstanding citizen and councilmen, but for truly helping the community and children of both Reno and Sparks, Nevada.
